Turnip Green Fried Pies

I know I'm not the only one that has seen articles scanned online only to be curious about what was on the other side.  I'm not going to leave you in suspense.

We decided to take this recipe for a spin.
We took several creative liberties by using spinach instead of turnip greens, substituted crescent roll dough for the pastry mentioned, and used an air fryer in lieu of traditional frying.

We also threw in some cream cheese to add a little more texture and flavor.
Once we put the rolls in the air fryer, we left them in for 8 minutes, flipped them, and finished them out for 8 more minutes.

Oh...my...word...these were super tasty!!!

These lasted no time at all.

we still had quite a bit of mixture left over so we decided to make little nuggets by adding some corn muffin mix and baking them for 25 minutes.

Wow...did this little experiment turn out excellent!

These we're gobbled up quick too!

Mods:
Frozen spinach instead of turnip greens.
Crescent roll dough instead of pastry.
Air fryer instead of traditional fryer.
Added cream cheese.

Final thoughts:
We did take a lot of liberties with this recipe but boy did it pay off.
The crescent rolls turned out amazing and so did the nuggets.
A huge 4 thumbs up from all the family!
I can see this one becoming a family favorite in the future.

Calico Pickles

What recipe box would not be complete without a recipe for pickles.  My granny had canning jars with this kind of stuff in them all over her place.  On a rare occasion, I'd be brave enough to try what was in one.  Looking back, I really wish I would've been brave enough to try a lot more.

Chocolate Scotcheroos

Ain't no party like an AARP meeting!  I loved going to those with my grandmother.
What kid doesn't want 23 grandparents making over them at the same time?
Plus, they had the best potlucks, especially when they showed up with treats like this one.

Spicy Tomato Mini-Loaves

I'm so conflicted with this recipe.
There's so many things right and wrong about this one.
Everything is better as a mini but tomato in a bread loaf with corn flakes?
This one is definitely for the more adventurous food scientist.

Cincinnati Chili

Almost as archaic as the recipes that were typed with an actual typewriter, here's one on the nearly extinct form of mail known as the postcard.
I'll have to say this has been a real piece of education for me.  I never knew that:
1.) Cincinnati is the chili capital of the USA
2.)  You can put this chili on almost everything.
I'm totally going to chow down on the chili spaghetti.
That just sounds beastly.

Diet Low Fat Chicken

Given the almost endless amounts of super sweet desserts contained in this little green box, this recipe kinda seems out of place.  If you're like me though, this one dish can offset a multitude of sweet tooth sins.

Amazing Coconut Pie

After looking at just the ingredients in this recipe, I can see just how amazing this one could be.

Brown Sugar Pound Cake

This recipe has soo much win.  First, the amount of sweetness in this cake could stop a moving truck.  Second, it's typed...with a real typewriter.
Generationally speaking, this is practically hammer and chisel.

Cheese Scalloped Potatoes and Carrots

Apparently this one was so good, someone took the time to make copies and distribute accordingly.

Broccoli and Cauliflower Salad / Fruit Muffins

Here's a two for one shot.
Physicians Mutual just trying to connect with their customers and keep them healthier.
I guess you'd say they were trying to protect their investments.

Haystacks Cookies

I think these would be rather tasty in the fall.

The whole family decided to get in on the action for this recipe.

The kiddos are almost as awkward as I am mixing things.

When in doubt though, we all turn to the expert to keep things in between the lines.

The recipe calls for a "teaspoon" scoop but we went with a cookie scooper.  We both thought that the teaspoon reference was an older term our grandmother's used when talking about a regular spoon.

We played around with the time since that was left up to the imagination.  We also decided that 300 degrees was probably a better heat.  It took about 20 minutes at that temp to get the job done.

BOOYAH!!!  Super tasty goodness!

The recipe we used made a little over 2 dozen cookies.

Good Lord...these are beastly good.  Chewy, crunchy, loveliness.

Mods:
We used sweetened coconut because that was the only kind we could find.
Time and temp was not given so we ended up at 300 degrees for around 20 minutes.

Final Thoughts:
Pretty easy to make.
Be prepared to eat a lot of these.
Definitely for fans of Samoa cookies.
A solid 4 thumbs up.
We're definitely going to make these again and will update the recipe if we end up tweaking anything else.

Quick Rolls

It seriously doesn't get much simpler and quick than this.

This is the first green box recipe we've tried as a family.

The mixture was more like a batter than a dough.

We doubled the ingredients and it created a dozen of these puppies.

14 minutes later and WOOHOO!!!  Nom Noms!!!

These are more like biscuits than rolls so we decided to slap some sausage on them.

Look at that inside...LOOK AT IT....

These scored a resounding 4 thumbs up from the Christian household!

Mods:
We used equal parts of half and half and skim milk.
Baked them for 14 minutes and then broiled for 2 minutes to brown the tops.

The updated recipe:
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup milk (we used a blend of skim milk and half and half)
2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Mix all ingredients and divide evenly into a buttered muffin tin and bake at 400° for 12-14 minutes. Then broil for a couple of minutes to brown the tops. Makes 6 muffin sized biscuits.

Final Thoughts:
Super easy to make
Very tasty
Instantly a new favorite for the family
4 thumbs up

Corn Bread

Sometimes you just gotta take it back to the basics.

Pinto Bean Cake

Nothing says delicious cake like a good ole pinto beans.
At least we know this cake is good for your heart.

Overnight Coleslaw

This one goes out to the patient food wizards out there.
Good things come to those who wait.

Sauerkraut Chocolate Cake

This one is not for the faint at heart.
Adventurers welcome!

Pecan Fingers

I'm a sucker for anything that has pecans.
These are no exception.

Light Buttermilk Pancakes

Let's be honest, a stack of these are tasty anytime of the day.

Cheesecake

The beauty is in the simplicity.

Lemon Pound Cake

Anything made with lemon always wins in my book...always.

Christmas Card Loaf

My granny used to get so many Christmas cards.
It seemed kinda trivial to me when I was a kid but now, I have a much greater appreciation of the relationships she had formed with so many people over the years.

I kinda miss those times.

Candied Sweet Potatoes

Let's just skip the turkey and fight with our family over a big dish of these.

Coconut Pecan Frosting

Just me, a big bowl of this, and Bob Ross painting.
THAT is the perfect Sunday evening.

Japanese Pie

I'm not sure how in the world this recipe got this title but I'm just rolling with it.

10 point deduction for using raisins...ever.

Tomato Soup

...because plain tomato soup just won't cut it sometimes.
